Tried to do something a little different with this drawing, a style i don’t usually take on. I really enjoyed drawing this image and coming up with the weird creatures and this is a style i can see me doing again. Drawn with coloured pencils and ink. 🙂

My latest pencil drawing done with my trusty Fabercastell Polychromos. This idea came to me from looking at my owl collection in my room. Still inspired by Julia Sonmi Heglund, i created these two little characters in a simplified form of one of her many styles. I enjoyed playing with colours and working with a limited palette. I used burnt ochre, dark chrome yellow, magenta, light turquoise and walnut brown.

Drawn by Amanda Toner (me), ( 2013), ‘Barn Owl’, coloured pencil, indian ink and white out.

After starting my character design project based within our current course project for ‘Self Portrait,’ i’ve actually found outhow hard it is to describe myself. I started a little series of characters that reflected aspects of my personality, but after doing three of them, it’s hard for me to think of things that i am personality wise. So last night i doodled this up while jotting down ideas for my next few characters. This piece was inspired by Julia Sonmi Heglund.

I drew this up last night out of boredom. I was looking back at my ‘Thin Angel’ picture and felt like drawing another thin creepy girl, and this is what came out! I have fun drawing in this type of style, because it’s out of (what is now) my ordinary. Apologies for the bad edit job, i would give you my excuse but its a typical boring one. 🙂

Character designs that reflect aspects of my personality.
No.3 : Caring.

After our last drawing class with Paula, i really enjoyed trying out Tim Burton’s style so i went home and played around with it again. For this character i focus on the personality trait: caring. I was stuck for ideas on what my personality is and how to apply it to character designs, so i asked some people to describe me in words. Someone gave me the word ‘caring.’ I feel like i am a caring person, especially when it comes to me taking care of animals. I take in sick, orphan, injured animals (that most often have been caught by the cat) and i try nurse them back to health. I care very much for all life and it is a passion of mine to take care of things that can’t take care of themselves.

So i began my self portrait project on my character designs that reflect on aspects of my personality! This is something i’ve chosen to do for my blog because it shows my love of character design and also relates to myself through personality traits.

The first two characters are ‘Bubbly’ and ‘Anxious.’
Bubbly is a bugglegum pink girl who i think shows the emotion of being a fun bubbly person well. I think most of the time i am a fun person and and bubbly when i get to know people. I become chatty and a bit silly too when i’m comfortable around others.

The second character is ‘Anxious.’ I decided i’d do a little sheep design because i could just picture this little guy being in a cartoon and he gets paranoid by things (almost like Courage the Cowardly dog!) I’m a person who has anxiety attacks often, but usually when i’m put in a situation i think i can’t handle, for example, i get panicked when i have to talk to someone on the phone or when i have to pay for something at a counter. These are small trivial things and i know this, but i seem to panic and my body and mind reacts to my thinking of ‘i’ll do something wrong.’ I often shake sometimes too, especially in my hands if i am holding small things (that aren’t art supplies!) that i think i will drop or smash. It’s something that’s become only recent (ever since i got my first job) and i’m not embarrased of it. It’s something many people have to deal with and it’s a hurdle i will jump.

Character design has always been an aspect of illustration that i’ve enjoyed ever since i was in  intermediate. The first character i ever created and kept as a design concept was a little blue dog when i was 11 and i’ve been designing characters ever since!

I doodled this girl character the other night and an idea sprang into my head for something i could do to contribute towards my ‘Self Portrait’ project. I had an idea of creating a small series of character designs that represent an element of my personality! So, the characters don’t have to look anything like me, but look like an aspect of who i am as a person ie; bubbly, anxious, strange etc. I’m excited to start with this little series and it’ll be interesting to sit down and come up with little characters that sum up me!
